Bull’s “Sounding Out Cosmopolitanism: Mobile Communication Technologies and Recognition”

Music, Sound and the Reconfiguration of Public and Private Space Conference – “Urban and mobile music/sound” panel continued:
In his paper “Sounding Out Cosmopolitanism: Mobile Communication Technologies and Recognition” Michael Bull presented some research from his recent publication “Sound Moves: IPod Culture and Urban Experience“, focussing on three key themes: seamless, fine-tuned and control. Bull describes Ipods as very successful in tweaking our sense of insecurity, and users report much higher satisfaction levels than with their mobile phones. Especially the many seemingly contradictory statements of users – e.g. that you blast music into your ears to achieve peace and quite – gave food for thought.
