Christoph Cox: Keynote lecture

I’m at the “Sound, Art, Auditory Cultures” conference in Copenhagen at the moment.
One of today’s highlights was Christoph Cox’ Keynote “Sound Art and the Ontology of the Audible”.

Following are some rough notes from the lecture, all of you who were there as well: please let me know if you have any comments or more detail about it!
Cox states that with the exploded interest in sound art in the US since about 2000 there has also been growing criticism that this is just repackaging of electronic or contemporary music for the art market. Cox opposes this criticism in developing an ‘ontology of the audible’.
He starts off with deconstructing the absolute relation of sound and signal, and rethink it as a relative relationship, using Leibnitz, Deleuze, Serres amongst others. In an everyday and science point of view, noise is Read the rest of this entry »
Call: Sounding Out. A Symposium On Sound in the Media
Martin Shingler invites us:
From 4-6th September 2008 the University of Sunderland will be hosting
Sounding Out 4, a three day international symposium on sound in the
media. Sounding Out 3 in September 2006 was a terrific event with over
100 delegates from all over the world, a great line-up of keynote
speakers and some wonderful papers and presentations. There was a
great atmosphere (largely due to the lovely weather). We’re hoping
that many of those who came before will return for Sounding Out 4 and
many who weren’t able to come before will take this opportunity.
We’ve assembled a magnificant line-up of speakers: including Richard
Dyer, Hildagard Westerkamp and Neil Brand.
As before we’ll be presenting some Read the rest of this entry »
Call: Sonic Interaction Design for Postgraduate Researchers
I’m involved with a European Initiative called “Sonic Interaction Design (SID) and especially with its Working Group “Interactive Art and Music”. Now the first call for “Short-Term Scientific Missions” is out:
COST-IC0601 Action on Sonic Interaction Design
Call for Short-Term Scientific Missions
Objectives
Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) are aimed at strengthening the
existing networks by allowing scientists to go to an institution or
laboratory in another COST member state to foster collaboration, to
learn a new technique or to take measurements using instruments and/or
methods not available in their own institution/laboratory. They are
particularly (yet not exclusively) intended for young scientists
(especially PhD students). STSMs may also be used to reimburse
students attending a training school organized by the Action.
Topics
COST-IC0601 Action on Sonic Interaction Design
is organized into four Working Groups
(WG). Emphasis is on activities that will contribute to the research
on one of the topics of the 4 Action’s WGs. The applicants
should show clearly in their applications how the planned activities and
the selection of host-institution will contribute to this aim.
WG1 ‘Perceptual, cognitive, and emotional study of sonic interactions’
promotes STSMs focusing on basic research questions addressed in
perceptual, cognitive, and emotional studies of sonic interactions.
Research studies should be therefore aimed to the understanding of
human sound reception in interactive contexts. The use of new
experimental paradigms such as neurosciences, ergonomical and
psycholinguistic studies are welcome.
WG2 ‘Product sound design’ supports STSMs involving the design and
evaluation of interactive products with a salient sonic behavior. The
results of such STSMs should involve methods stressing emotional,
perceptual and aesthetical qualities of sounding objects, and help
designers in introducing sonic properties in their process.
WG3 ‘Interactive Art and Music’ would like to encourage
STSMs that explore the artistic, creative and critical potential of
sound. We welcome artist-researchers from a variety of backgrounds
such as art, music, design, architecture, sonic and performing arts as
well as interdisciplinary approaches. The results of STSMs could
contribute to understanding the role of sound in interactive art and
music, suggest creative ways of using sound in interactive objects,
environments or in the mobile context; other results might contribute
to explaining the cultural and social context of sound.
WG4 ‘Sonification’ supports STSMs that contribute to a better
understanding, design and use of sonifications in interaction. This
encompasses among others novel applications for sonification, the
development of sonification techniques, their evaluation as well as
research on theory and guidelines. The results of such STSMs would
suggest novel ways to create or use informative sounds that support
the interaction, or deliver an increased insight into involved data or
information. Read the rest of this entry »

Call: ISEA 2008
contributions from musicology, sound studies, media art and many more are called for:
This is a gentle reminder that the submission deadline for ISEA2008
call for papers, artists and panel presentations will close on 14 Nov
2007.
(This is during the Sailing4Geeks project I was part of at ISEA 2004)
International Symposium on Electronic Arts 2008 -ISEA2008 – is seeking
both peer- reviewed individual papers and panel presentations. This
year we are also encouraging artists who wish to share their works
with a broader audience of their peers to submit artist presentations
where they can speak about the specific aesthetic, conceptual and
technological aspects of their works.
We welcome contributions from creative practitioners and researchers
from a variety of disciplines and institutional contexts as media arts
benefits from and exemplifies the interdisciplinary linkages between
contemporary art, science, technology and their related philosophies,
pedagogies and institutional practices. The submissions must address
or be of relevance to at least one of the themes of ISEA2008 in order
to be considered for inclusion in the conference.
The conference will be of interest to those working in but not limited
to the following areas: media art, contemporary art, design, art
history and theory, film and media studies, gaming, toy design,
human-computer interaction, cultural studies, literary studies,
musicology, sound studies, theatre, dance and performance studies,
science, technology and society studies, history of science and
history of technology, philosophy, history, gender studies, political
science, anthropology, sociology and geography.
For more information on the themes and for the submission link, please
log on www.isea2008.org <http://www.isea2008.org>
Call: online, mobile & unplugged social networking
THE SOCIAL – ONLINE, MOBILE AND UNPLUGGED SOCIAL NETWORKING
CALL FOR CONFERENCE SUBMISSIONS

(Took this picture of Tapio Makela playing “Schminky” at Futuresonic 2004)
The Futuresonic international conference and the Social Technologies
Summit invite proposals for talks, presentations, workshops and
session themes. Submissions of innovative formats for social
interaction and experimentation are encouraged.
The conference theme is The Social – Online, Mobile and Unplugged
Social Networking.

discussions take place. Over recent years hype about social software
and web 2.0 has raged largely unchecked. The conference will bring
together leading Read the rest of this entry »
Call: Street Art with Open source
I hope for some sound and music projects in this masterclass!
MASTERCLASS IN STREET ART USING OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGIES

3-7 March 2008
Artspace @ Adelaide Festival Centre
Applications close November 16, 2007
Applications are now open for participation in a week-long masterclass
with the Graffiti Research Lab (NY).
Evan Roth and James Powderly (Graffiti Research Lab) are dedicated to
outfitting street artists with open source technologies for urban
communication. The goal of GRL is to technologically empower
individuals to creatively alter and reclaim their surroundings from
unchecked development and corporate visual culture. GRL have been
touring the globe (SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica, Numusic Festival, Art
Rotterdam) demonstrating and Read the rest of this entry »
