I wrote about the “Auditory Torches ” Project a while ago (http://mobilesound.wordpress.com/2007/08/02/auditory-torches/)

Heuten, Wilko, Niels Henze, and Susanne Boll (2007), ‘Interactive exploration of city maps with auditory torches’, CHI ’07: CHI ’07 extended abstracts on Human factors in computing systems 1959-64.

Now I found a video explaining the project:

hmmm … interesting. I wonder how this might actually be combined with real sounds rather than the symbolic samples they used. Further the sound stuff seemed not directional at all (at least in the video).

The whole thing came across as very visually based — where are the reactions of the visually impaired (who were involved in the evaluation, if we believe what the video tells us)?
